Fish Vava'u with Skipper Keith McKee:
Vava’u is primarily a Blue Marlin and Sailfish fishery. Striped Marlin and Blacks are here at certain times of the year but are not predominant. Mahi-mahi, Yellow-fin Tuna and Wahoo are normally a common catch and available to be caught most of the year with a few Giant Trevally and Dogtooth Tuna being landed at certain times of the year.
We troll for our fish using mainly lures and occasionally live and dead baits. During the course of the day, weather and sea conditions permitting, we stop at the F.A.D’s to do some cubing and strip baiting (weather conditions permitting) however we do not spend our total day on this activity, unless the clients have the sole charter of the boat and it is their choice.

From June through to late October, the Humpback Whales are in our waters to mate and give birth to their young. Vava'u is unique as a whalewatch centre as whales can be seen very easily when out fishing or within the island group, often only minutes from the inner harbour. When fishing, these whales are able to be seen during a normal day - an added and impressive attraction.
If you just wanted to take a day off from fishing, Kiwi Magic has been associated with the Whale Watch industry in Vava’u, Kingdom of Tonga since 1991. Keith, Skipper, of Kiwi Magic first became aware of the amazing Humpback Whales when taking his first sport fishing charters back in the early 90’s. Since then Kiwi Magic management has been actively involved in the growth of the industry and has worked with international organizations such as I.F.A.W. and S.P.R.E.P. to assist with the setting of guidelines which are recognized internationally.
Our Whale Watch/Swim Guide Folau Loketi is a fully certified Whale Watch Guide with an International Whale Guide Certification. He will guide you in the water and assist with your swim.
We supply masks, snorkels, fins and a light wetsuit buoyancy vest with all our charters. Where possible we like to depart from approximately 6.30am. Depending on whether most guests are keen for an early start.
We only take four swimmers on the boat to maximise your swimming opportunity as the Whale Watch Regulations stipulate there are only allowed to be four swimmers in the water at any one time. If you make up your own group, up to six swimmers will be allowed on board but will not all be able to swim at the same time.
We also offer photographers exclusive use of the vessel for their needs and can give references from international photographers who have chartered with us.
